The Position

Sproule is seeking an experienced upstream oil and gas business leader to fill the role of Managing Director, Asset Management. This position, which reports to the Chief Operating Officer of Sproule (COO) is responsible for the Asset Management Business Unit (AMBU) performance, business development and strategic direction of the growing AMBU. In this role, the successful candidate will effectively be the ‘CEO’ for Sproule Asset Management Limited (SAML) and will need to have a working understanding of all aspects of the upstream business including corporate strategy, production, operations, engineering, geology, geophysics, land, asset closure, regulatory, HSE and financial and production accounting.

Position Responsibilities

Under the direction of the COO, the Managing Director, Asset Management will be responsible for the following:

Business Unit Performance

  • Provide mentorship and leadership to the Asset Management team in conjunction with the VP Asset Management Operations, collectively being responsible for the morale and culture of the Asset Management team
  • Engage with VP Asset Management Operations to develop the annual revenue, cost and gross margin budgets
  • Monitor monthly performance against budget; strategize and take corrective measures to achieve budget goals
  • Provide advisory services to clients in areas of key competencies
  • Consistently monitor staffing levels to ensure fit for purpose staffing and optimized gross margins
  • Hire and right-size contractors and staff to ensure optimal efficiency and cost performance of Asset Management personnel

 Business Development and Strategy

  • Engage with SVP Corporate Development to develop an ongoing five-year plan for the Asset Management Business Unit
  • Driving one-off existing client and new business to ensure revenue targets are met
  • Work with the Sproule Business Development team to develop a marketing strategy for Asset Management including thought leadership.
  • Primary Client Relationship Manager and responsible for client retention on most files
  • Build and deliver Asset Management proposals
  • Source Asset Management opportunities
  • Engage with other Sproule business unit leaders to develop opportunities, share strategy, provide fully-integrated services
  • Serve as a liaison with other business units to provide asset management support, proposal costing and strategic direction
  • Monitor and progress business opportunities
  • Negotiate and secure engagement agreements with clients within the context of achieving gross profit margins and providing a value-added service
  • Keep abreast of developments within relevant disciplines including regulatory and reporting requirements to maintain and provide leading-edge knowledge and recommendations


  • Primary SAML signing authority for proposals and engagement agreements and back-up SAML signatory for VP Asset Management Operations primary signing responsibilities
  • Client banking and contract signatory with responsibility for delivering client specific commercial contracts as required
  • Attend and report at various meetings:
  • Act as mentor and resource for the VP, Asset Management Operations
  • Act as a resource for operational and client strategy as required

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Geoscience preferred but may consider CPA, BComm or MBA
  • 15+ years broad upstream oil and gas experience including working closely with corporate planning, engineering, geology, geophysics, land, health, safety, environmental, regulatory and accounting personnel
  • 10+ years in a leadership role with an oil and gas producer
  • Possesses the leadership skills and business acumen required of a CEO of a small producing entity
  • Professional license or accreditation (P.Eng., CPA, etc.)
  • Knowledge of oil and gas regulatory regimes in Western Canada
  • Demonstrated experience communicating a strategic vision and implementing business strategy
  • Proven ability in business development measured by successful outcomes
  • Experience in professional service consulting a definite asset

Other Requirements

This position will work out of Sproule’s office located in Calgary. This role requires the ability to complete domestic and international travel to promote and build the Asset Management business. Due to the nature of responsibilities, our final candidate will require completion of a criminal check and credit check as a condition of employment.
